Grinnell volleyball team sails by Illinois College

Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Grinnell College volleyball team sailed to a four-set victory over Illinois College Friday night in Midwest Conference action.

Set scores, in favor of the winners, were 25-14, 25-19, 15-25 and 25-20. Grinnell is now 3-4 in the league and 3-22 in all matches, while Illinois College dipped to 0-7 in the MWC and 3-17 overall.

Claire Weidman '15 and Olivia Fromm '17 had 16 and 11 kills, respectively, for the winners while Jeanette Au '16 added 23 assists and Lindsay Fujimoto '15 had 17.

Sydney McClendon '16 came up with three ace serves and 32 digs, while Weidman tallied 11 digs. Weidman and Rebecca Rasmussen '16 had two blocks apiece.

Monica Knaack '17 had a four-point service run that helped Grinnell get out to a 6-2 lead early on. After Illinois College came within 8-5, the Pioneers responded with a 7-1 spurt to pull away. Fromm and Evelyn Weidman '17 each had two kills during that run as Grinnell won easily.

The second set was tied at 13-all before Grinnell went on a key 6-1 run. Fromm had two kills during that span and Evelyn Weidman one as the Pioneers sailed to victory.

After losing the third set, Grinnell found itself in an 11-7 hole in the fourth before going on a 4-0 run as McClendon had a service ace and Evelyn Weidman a kill to tie things up. The contest remained close and was tied 17-all before the Pioneers erupted for six consecutive points. Claire Weidman had two kills during that time and Au an ace.

After the hosts scored two points, Grinnell got two of the final three to secure the victory.

Grinnell returns to Darby Gymnasium next Friday to host Carroll University. Match time is 7 p.m.
