Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – Carroll University defeated Grinnell College 25-13, 25-9 and 25-16 in Midwest Conference volleyball action Friday night at Darby Gymnasium.
The winners stayed in contention for the league title while moving to 7-1 in the MWC and 17-10 overall. Grinnell fell to 3-5 in the league and 3-23 overall.
Natalie Duncombe '15 had eight kills for Grinnell and
Claire Weidman '15 added five.
Lindsay Fujimoto '15 came up with 11 assists and two aces.
Sydney McClendon '16 tallied nine digs, while
Liz Nelson '17 and
Olivia Fromm '17 had one block apiece.
Carroll broke out to a 6-1 lead in the first set. Grinnell closed the gap to three points when an attack error by the visitors made it 10-7. But Carroll answered with a six-point run and never looked back.
Grinnell got out to a 3-2 lead in the second set on kills by Dumcombe, Weidman and
Evelyn Weidman '17. However, Carroll responded with a 6-1 run and cruised from there.
The hosts built a 7-4 edge in the third set on
Claire Weidman's kill before Carroll rallied to take the lead. It was still a close match, with an ace by McClendon bringing Grinnell into a 12-all tie. But the visitors responded with a five-point run en route to victory.
Grinnell is back at Darby Gymnasium Saturday when Ripon College visits for a MWC contest. Action begins at 1 p.m.
