Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College volleyball team bounced back from a rough outing Friday night and put up a good fight against Ripon College Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.
But in the end, the Red Hawks had just a bit too much firepower as they won in four sets. Grinnell rolled to a 25-14 win in the first set, but the Red Hawks answered with victories of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-21 to improve to 6-2 in the Midwest Conference and 14-13 overall.
Grinnell, 3-6 in the league and 3-24 in all matches, hit .220 as a team after being in negative numbers the night before.
Claire Weidman '15,
Olivia Fromm '17 and
Natalie Duncombe '15 had 14, 12 and 10 kills, respectively.
Jeanette Au '16 and
Lindsay Fujimoto '15 both had 18 assists, while
Evelyn Weidman '17 added four blocks and three aces.
Sydney McClendon '16 led the way in digs with 27, while
Claire Weidman chipped in with 13 and Fromm 10.
The first set was tied 9-all before Grinnell went on a key run with the aid of kills by
Liz Nelson '17, Fromm and
Ariel Lepito'17 to make it 13-9. It was still just 17-13 before the Pioneers closed out the set by scoring eight of the next nine points. Duncombe had a kill during that span and
Evelyn Weidman served four points.
The second set was tight most of the way, with Grinnell closing within 19-18 on a kill by Fromm. But Ripon scored six of the next seven to secure the win.
Ripon got out to an 11-4 lead in the next set and won comfortably. It was the Pioneers who got out to a fast start in the next set, as Fujimoto had a five-point service run and Fromm and Duncombe a pair of kills each as Grinnell went ahead 10-5.
Ripon slowly came back, but the Pioneers still led 15-12 after Duncombe's kill. The Red Hawks came back with an 8-2 run for a 20-17 lead.
Grinnell got as close as two points three times after that, the last at 22-20 on a Fromm kill. But the visitors closed out the set by scoring three of the next four for the win.
The Pioneers conclude their season Wednesday when nationally-ranked Cornell College visits Darby Gymnasium. Match time is 7 p.m.
