Pioneer netters fall to nationally-ranked Cornell

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College volleyball team lost a three-set decision to nationally-ranked Cornell College Wednesday night at Darby Gymnasium.

Cornell, rated 22nd in NCAA Division III, won by scores of 25-25, 25-11 and 25-15. Grinnell finished its campaign at 3-7 in the Midwest Conference and 3-25 overall, while Cornell wound up league play at a perfect 10-0 while improving to 24-3 in all matches.

Claire Weidman '15, Liz Nelson '17 and Olivia Fromm '17 each had five kills for the Pioneers. Fromm had a .417 hitting efficiency and Nelson .400.

Lindsay Fujimoto '15 added 11 assists, Monica Knaack '17 added two aces, Sydney McClendon '16 came up with 11 digs and Evelyn Weidman '17 had two blocks.

Cornell shot out to an 8-3 lead in the first set and cruised to victory from there. In the second set, the visitors scored 10 of the first 12 points en route to the win.

Grinnell made things interesting in the third set. After falling behind 7-3, the Pioneers went on a four-point run with the aid of Jeanette Au's '16 three-point service run and kills by Claire Weidman and Nelson to tie things at 7-all. However, Cornell came back by scoring the next 10 points on its way to finishing off the match.
