Grinnell men's basketball remains perfect with win over Wartburg

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College men's basketball team maintained its perfect start to the season Wednesday with an 88-79 victory over Wartburg College at Darby Gymnasium.

Julian Marx '17 hit 8-of-12 shots from 3-point land while scoring a game-high 26 points for the Pioneers, who are now 3-0. Luke Yeager '15 added 17 points and Patrick Maher '14 scored 15.

Tague Zachary '15 and Stuart Hoegh '17 had four rebounds apiece, Yeager added four assists and multiple players had two steals.

Grinnell got out to a fast start, scoring the first nine points of the game. Zachary opened things up with a 3-pointer, Maher hit a jumper and Marx drained a 3-pointer. Jack Taylor '15 then made a free throw for a nine-point lead with 16:51 left.

After Wartburg rallied to make it a three-point game with 10:33 left in the half, Grinnell responded with a 19-7 run to pull away. Yeager had seven points during the run, including a 3-pointer, while Maher had six with a trey. Nick Curta '17 added a 3-pointer and Kyle Parker '17 a pair of free throws to make it a 37-22 lead.

Grinnell led 52-43 at halftime and went ahead by as many as 19 in the second half before winning by nine. With the loss, Wartburg fell to 1-2.

The Pioneers open Midwest Conference play Saturday at lllinois College. Game time is 1 p.m.
