Pioneer men's basketball team improves to 5-0 with victory at Beloit

Box Score BELOIT, Wis. – The Grinnell College men's basketball team continued its perfect start Saturday afternoon, winning a 128-120 Midwest Conference decision at Beloit College.

The Pioneers, 2-0 in the league and 5-0 in all games, had six players in double figures. Aaron Levin '14 led the way with 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting, including a 3-of-5 performance from 3-point land and 3-of-3 free throw shooting.

Patrick Maher '14 added 22 points, hitting all eight of his field goal tries including 3-of-3 on 3-pointers. Jack Taylor '15 and Luke Yeager '15 both had 16 points, Kyle Parker '17 scored 14 and Evan Johnson '15 tallied 11.

Maher also dished out 11 assists and had six rebounds. Levin added seven boards, while Julian Marx '17 got two steals.

Grinnell led by just one before going on a key eight-point run in the first half. Taylor had a basket and free throw, Levin nailed a 3-pointer and Johnson added a layup to put the visitors up 27-18 with 13:42 remaining.

Grinnell built its lead as big as 10 before settling for a 61-55 halftime lead. The Pioneers went up by 12 in the second half, but the hosts came back and trimmed the gap to 101-100 with 7:17 left.

That's when the Pioneers responded with an 11-3 run for a 112-103 lead with 4:59 left. Marx, Parker and Maher all had 3-pointers in that span, while Levin connected on a layup.

Beloit never got closer than five after that while falling to 0-2 in the MWC and 1-3 in all games.

Grinnell returns to Darby Gymnasium Wednesday to entertain Monmouth College. Game time is 5 p.m.
