Grinnell comeback falls short in MWC Tourney

Box Score DE PERE, Wis. – The Grinnell College men's basketball team saw a comeback fall short in a 92-89 setback to Carroll University Friday in the Midwest Conference Tournament semifinals at St. Norbert College.

Patrick Maher '14 scored a game-high 32 points for the Pioneers, including making 14-of-17 free throws. Griffin Lentsch '13 poured in 25 points as he sank 5-of-10 shots from 3-point land. Grinnell, 17-6 overall, also got four assists from Maher and Garrett Nitz '13 and two steals from Nitz, Marques Valdez '13 and Tague Zachary '15. Valdez had seven rebounds.

Andrew Nolting scored 22 points for Carroll, which improved to 18-6 and will play either St. Norbert College or Ripon College at 3 p.m. Saturday for the title.

Grinnell built a seven-point lead halfway through the first half on a free throw by Joe Rogers '13. However, Carroll rallied and was up 44-41 at intermission.

Carroll built its lead as large as 13 in the second half before the Pioneers came back. Down by seven with 1:10 left, Maher made two free throws and Lentsch a trey to bring Grinnell within 89-87 with :42 left.

Grinnell later came within two on a shot by Maher with :19 left, but Carroll hung on for the win.
