Pioneers drop season opener to Benedictine

Box Score WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Grinnell College got out to a 1-0 lead in the opening inning, but Benedictine University rallied to post a 13-4 baseball victory Sunday afternoon.

Kainoa Inafuku '14 had two of Grinnell's six hits, including a double. Colin Tremblay '14 and Jacob Beecher '16 also doubled for the Pioneers, who are 0-1, while Walker Bell '16 had a single.

Benedictine, 3-1 on the season, rapped out 18 hits in the game.

Grinnell's run in the first came when Anthony Mack '16 walked, was sacrificed to second by Matt Blumenreich '13 and scored on Inafuku's RBI single up the middle.

Benedictine scored three runs in the bottom of the first, two more in the second and five in the fourth for a 10-1 cushion.

The Pioneers added a run in the sixth as Inafuku walked with one out and scored on Tremblay's double down the right-field line. Benedictine scored three runs in the bottom of the inning for a 13-2 lead.

The Pioneers finished off their scoring with two runs in the top of the ninth. Bell led off with a single down the left-field line and took second on a wild pitch.

Steven Petritis '15 entered to pinch run for Bell, which was followed by Drew Davis '13 betting hit by a pitch. Tyler Sipala '13 then pinch ran for Davis and Karl Nelson '13 was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Beecher followed with a two-run double to left-center.

Will Pahos '14, the first of five Grinnell pitchers, suffered the loss.

The Pioneers play Anderson University of Indiana in a twin bill today.
