Pioneer baseball team loses pair to Anderson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Grinnell College baseball team lost a pair of games to Anderson University (Ind.) on Monday, falling 8-2 in the opener and 3-2 in the second game.

In the opener, Anderson got out to a 6-0 lead with single runs in the third and fifth innings and four in the fourth.

The Pioneers scored both their runs in the sixth. With two out, Drew Davis '13 walked and went to second on a wild pitch. Matt Godinsky '16 and Phillip Zarcone '15 also walked to load the bases before Graham Conlon '14 singled to left to plate both runs.

Anderson scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to complete the scoring.

Besides Conlon, others getting hits for Grinnell were Walker Bell '16 and Godinsky with doubles, and Matt Blumenreich '13 and Jacob Beecher '16 with singles.

Sam Tinkham '16, the first of three Grinnell pitchers, was tagged with the loss despite giving up just one earned run in 3-2/3 innings.

In the second game, the Pioneers were limited to three hits. John Essig '16 had a strong pitching effort for Grinnell, scattering six hits over six innings and not giving up an earned run. Andrew Kelley '14 was tagged with the loss in relief.

Grinnell jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning as Blumenreich walked, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a double to center by Davis.

Anderson tied the game in the fifth before Grinnell retook the lead at 2-1 in the bottom of the inning. Again Blumenreich walked, was sacrificed to second by Anthony Mack '16, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bell.

Anderson scored two runs in the top of the seventh to rally for the win.

Besides Davis' hit, Bell also doubled for Grinnell and Matt Schaeffer '14 had a single.

On Tuesday, the Pioneers dropped decisions of 9-2 and 7-2 to Hope College. The Pioneers have Wednesday off before taking on Concordia (Wis.) on Thursday.
