Pioneers lose close battle with nationally-ranked team

Box Score LAKE MYRTLE, Fla. – The Grinnell College baseball team hung with nationally-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Friday, but the Warhawks ended up winning 8-5.

Grinnell managed eight hits in the game, including two by Walker Bell '16. He had a double among his totals, as did Matt Schaeffer '14 and Phillip Zarcone '15.

The Warhawks, who are 16th in the latest D3baseball.com national rankings, scored two runs in the first inning. The Pioneers cut that lead in half in the fourth when Bell doubled to left-center field, moved to third on a sacrifice by Matt Blumenreich '13 and scored on a groundout by Schaeffer.

The winners put two runs on the board in the fifth and sixth innings for a 6-1 lead. Grinnell got two back in the seventh. Zarcone reached base on an error with one out, took second on a wild pitch and reached third when Penaflor got on base via an error.

A double steal allowed Zarcone to score, and Anthony Mack '16 singled to right to push Penaflor across the plate.

The Warhawks, who improved to 5-3, got solo runs in the eighth and ninth innings for an 8-3 lead.

Grinnell made one last surge, scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Zarcone doubled to right field to lead things off and went to third when Mack reached on an error. Drew Davis '13 knocked in one run when he got on base via a fielder's choice, and Mack later scored on an error.

Will Pahos '14, the first of four Grinnell pitchers, suffered the pitching loss.

Grinnell, 1-6 on the season, plays Amherst on Saturday.
