Box Score LAKE MYRTLE, Fla. – The Grinnell College baseball team broke out the bats Thursday, rapping out nine hits while collecting its first victory of the season with a 9-3 decision over Concordia University of Wisconsin.
Drew Davis '13,
Ryan Penaflor '16 and
Anthony Mack '16 all had two hits for the Pioneers, who are 1-5. One of Penaflor's was a double.
Kainoa Inafuku '14,
Matt Blumenreich '13 and
Phillip Zarcone '15 all had one hit.
Graham Fisher '16 had a strong effort on the mound, scattering six hits and giving up just two runs over 5-2/3 innings to earn the win. He fanned four batters.
Jason Ormond '13 tossed one-hit ball over 2-1/3 innings while striking out three, while
Andrew Platt '13 worked the final inning and didn't give up a hit while fanning two batters.
Concordia scored two runs in the first inning before the Pioneers broke open the game with six runs in the second.
Graham Conlon '14 reached base on an error, took second on Penaflor's single to center and moved to third when
Karl Nelson '13 walked.
Mack followed with an RBI single to right and Davis came up with an infield single that plated another run. Inafuku's single allowed two more runs to score, and Blumenreich later added in infield single that pushed across a pair of runs.
Grinnell added another run in the fourth as Davis walked, moved to second on Inafuku's sacrifice, stole third and scored on a balk.
The Pioneers completed their scoring in the fifth. Zarcone singled to left, moved to second on Penaflor's sacrifice and took third on an error on the sacrifice. Zarcone later scored on a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk by Bell allowed Penaflor to score.
Concordia, 0-2 on the season, got its final run in the seventh inning.
Grinnell has a big game Friday, facing nationally-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Warhawks are 16th in the latest D3baseball.como rankings.
