Box Score

ORLANDO, Fla. – Sparked by a victory at No. 1 doubles against a regionally-ranked duo, the Grinnell College men's tennis team rolled past Hobart College 6-3 Thursday.

Elliott Czarnecki '15 and Emilio Gomez '15 won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles against the Northeast Region's 10th-ranked tandem.

Grinnell, ranked 13th in the Central Region and owning a 17-7 record, swept doubles as Colin Johnson '13 and Tracy Johnson '16 won 8-4 at No. 2 and Aaron Lapkin '15 and Benjamin Charney '15 posted an 8-3 decision at No. 3.

In singles, Czarnecki won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1, Tracy Johnson earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 3 and Colin Johnson won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6.

With the loss, Hobart – ranked 14th in the Northeast Region – dipped to 2-6.

“This was a nice win for us, especially coming off the hard-fought loss to Hope,” said Grinnell coach Andy Hamilton. “I was particularly pleased with our doubles play. It seems like we've gotten better in doubles as the week has gone on. In singles, it was wonderful to see Elliott win. He toils every day at the top of our lineup against a very strong schedule, and for him to get a victory was really important for him and our program.

“I can't say enough about the Johnsons from Wisconsin, Colin and Tracy,” he added. “They really had a great night tonight in singles and in doubles. We continue to see Aaron Lapkin play very good singles. Despite the loss, he hit the ball very well tonight. I'm pleased to have him back playing in the program after doing his theater production.”

Grinnell closes out its spring break trip Friday against NAIA powerhouse Oklahoma Baptist.
