Pioneers close spring break trip with 2 wins in 3 games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 LAKE MYRTLE, Fla. – The Grinnell College baseball team finished its spring break trip on a strong note, winning two of its final three games.

The Pioneers doubled up Amherst 8-4 on Saturday and then edged the University of Chicago 4-3 the following day. That was followed by a 16-3 setback to Chicago.

Grinnell pounded out 12 hits against Amherst, including two apiece by Drew Davis '13 and Kainoa Inafuku '14. Davis, Walker Bell '16, Inafuku and Phillip Zarcone '15 all had doubles.

Sam Tinkham '16 had a strong starting pitching effort, scattering eight hits over 6-2/3 innings and striking out five. Jason Ormond '13 tossed 1-1/3 innings of hitless relief to get his first win of the season.

Andrew Platt '13 and Andrew Kelley '14 finished off the game with hitless pitching, with Kelley earning the save.

Grinnell opened the scoring in the first when Davis doubled to left, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Bell's groundout. Amherst tied it in the second, but Grinnell went ahead 2-1 in the fifth when Inafuku doubled to left and scored on Bell's single to left.

Grinnell made it 4-1 in the seventh. Yuki Kawahara '15 singled with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch. Inafuku then walked before Bell delivered a two-run double to left.

Amherst tied the game in the bottom of the seventh before Grinnell broke the tie with four runs in the ninth. Anthony Mack '16 walked, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch.

Davis then walked and stole second and Bell was intentionally walked. Mack scored on a wild pitch and Matt Blumenreich '13 came up with a two-run single to right. Matt Schaeffer '14 followed with an RBI single to right.

John Essig '16 and Platt combined on a five-hitter in the win over Chicago. Essig gave up four runs in 4-1/3 innings while striking out four. Platt earned his first victory of the season when he tossed one-hit ball over the final 2-2/3 innings while striking out four.

Davis led Grinnell's hitting attack with a homer and double, while Zarcone also doubled.

Grinnell got a run in the first inning when Davis doubled to left, took third on Inafuku's single to right and came across the plate on a wild pitch.

Chicago tied it with a run in the fourth inning before Grinnell put up two runs in the fifth. Davis accounted for those with a two-run homer to left, which scored Kawahara.

After Chicago tied things in the bottom of the inning, Grinnell scored in the sixth to secure the victory. Zarcone doubled to center, went to third on a balk and came across the plate on Mack's single to right.

In the loss to Chicago, Davis and Ryan Penaflor '16 each had two hits. Davis had a triple among his totals and Jacob Beecher '16 and Mack added doubles.

Chicago scored one run in the first, seven in the third and three in the fifth. Grinnell scored once in the bottom of the fifth when Mack was hit by a pitch and scored on Beecher's double to right.

Chicago tacked on three runs in the top of the sixth for a 14-1 lead.

The Pioneers closed out their scoring in the bottom of the sixth. Penaflor singled to center and took third on Mack's double to right before Inafuku scored both with a single to left.

The winners closed out the scoring with two runs in the seventh.

Kelley suffered the pitching loss for Grinnell.

The Pioneers, 3-7 on the season, are slated to play at Central College Thursday.
