Pioneers split games with Washington University

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Grinnell College's baseball team split a twin bill with Washington University Friday, pounding out 14 hits to win the opener 3-2 and then falling 4-2 in the second game.

In the first game, Kainoa Inafuku '14 and Anthony Mack '16 each went 3-for-3 at the plate. Matt Schaeffer '14 and Ryan Penaflor '16 each had two hits.

John Essig '16 scattered eight hits and gave up just one earned run in eight innings to earn the pitching win. He struck out four. Andrew Kelley '14 earned his second save of the year.

The hosts grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first, but Grinnell responded with solo runs in the fifth, eighth and ninth innings. In the fifth, Drew Davis '13 singled to left-center with one out, went to second on Inafuku's sacrifice, moved to third on an error and scored on Walker Bell's '16 single to right-center.

In the eighth, Schaeffer walked, went to second and third on wild pitches and scored on Penaflor's infield single. In the ninth, Inafuku singled up the middle and scored on Phillip Zarcone's '16 double to right field.

Grinnell outhit the hosts 8-6 in the nightcap despite the loss. Will Pahos '14 had a strong pitching effort for the Pioneers, giving up just six hits and no earned runs in 7-2/3 innings.

Inafuku, Penaflor and Mack all had two hits for the Pioneers, who got out to a 2-0 lead with solo runs in the first and fifth innings. Washington responded with two runs in the seventh and eighth.

In the first, Inafuku reached on an error, moved to second on a passed ball, went to third on a fielder's choice and scored on an error. Inafuku doubled to right field in the fifth and scored on Bell's single to center.

Grinnell, 4-8 on the season, plays Washington and St. Norbert on Saturday.
