Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Grinnell College's baseball team pounded out 17 hits on its way to a 16-3 victory over Washington University on Saturday.
Drew Davis '13 went 4-for-6 at the plate with a pair of RBIs and three runs scored.
Walker Bell '16 and
Phillip Zarcone '15 each had three hits, while
Ryan Penaflor '16 and
Anthony Mack '16 had two hits apiece.
Jason Ormond '13 got the pitching win, working 6-2/3 innings while scattering four hits and fanning three.
Grinnell got a run in the first inning when an error plated Davis, and added four more runs in the second on RBI singles by Davis, Penaflor, Bell and
Matt Blumenreich '13.
The Bears scored two runs in the bottom of the second before Grinnell got a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth for an 8-2 lead. Davis had an RBI single in the fifth, while Zarcone had an RBI double in the sixth.
Grinnell got a run in the seventh when Bell scored on a wild pitch, making it 9-2. The Pioneers then erupted for seven runs in the eighth. Zarcone had a two-run single, while Bell and Penaflor each had one-run singles.
Coby Klar '16 pushed in a run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and
Karl Nelson '13 had an RBI on a groundout.
Washington scored once in the bottom of the eighth, giving Grinnell the victory via the 10-run rule.
Grinnell, 5-9 on the season, then lost an 8-2 decision to defending Midwest Conference champion St. Norbert College. Bell and Zarcone each had two hits for the Pioneers.
St. Norbert scored a run in the top of the first, but the Pioneers answered with a run in the bottom of the second when Mack pushed across a run on a sacrifice bunt.
The Green Knights tallied a run in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh for a 6-1 edge. The Pioneers closed out their scoring with one run in the bottom of the seventh on Mack's RBI groundout.
St. Norbert scored twice in the eighth to make it an 8-2 lead.
