Box Score 2 GRINNELL, Iowa – One game after being shut out by Illinois College, the Grinnell College baseball team came back with a vengeance.
The Pioneers pounded out 14 hits, including career-first homers for
Walker Bell '15 and
Adam Renfro '16, to roll past the Blueboys 8-2 at Pioneer Park.
Will Pahos '14 had a strong pitching effort to complement the team's hitting. He scattered five hits and allowed just one earned run while striking out eight in a complete-game performance. He is now 2-3.
With the win, Grinnell improved to 2-4 in the Midwest Conference and 7-13 overall. The Blueboys fell to 4-2 in the league and 9-11 in all games.
Anthony Mack '16 had three hits for Grinnell, including a pair of doubles, while
Yuki Kawahara '15, Bell,
Matt Schaeffer '14 and Cody Klar '16 had two hits each. Bell also had five RBIs.
The Pioneers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Kawahara hit an infield single, took second on Mack's sacrifice and scored on Bell's single to right.
The Pioneers tacked on three more runs in the second. Klar led off with an infield single and went to second on an error during the play. He moved to third on a sacrifice by
Matt Blumenreich '13.
Kawahara was then hit by a pitch and stole second before Bell blasted a three-run homer over the left-field fence to make it 4-0.
The visitors scored a run in the top of the fourth, but Grinnell responded with three in the sixth. Renfro led off the frame with a solo homer over the left-field fence. It was not only his first career homer, but also his first career hit as a Pioneer.
Klar then singled to right and Blumenreich followed suit with a single through the left side. A sacrifice by Kawahara advanced each runner before Mack came up with a two-run double to right-center.
The Pioneers concluded their scoring in the eighth when Kawahara struck out but reached base when the pitch was dropped. He went to third on Mack's double to right and scored on Bell's sacrifice fly to center.
The Blueboys finished out the scoring with a run in the ninth.
In the opener, Illinois College's David Pardo tossed a two-hitter to send his team to victory. Grinnell's hits were singles by Bell and Blumenreich.
The Blueboys got three runs in the second inning and two in the seventh.
The same two teams play another doubleheader Sunday at Pioneer Park. The first pitch is set for 10 a.m.
