Box Score 2 GRINNELL, Iowa – After having a no-hitter thrown at them the first game, the Grinnell College Pioneers made amends during the second stanza of Sunday's baseball doubleheader with Illinois College.
The Pioneers rapped out 15 hits in the nightcap at Pioneer Park to earn a 10-4 Midwest Conference victory. Grinnell improved to 3-5 in the MWC with the win and 8-14 overall, while the Blueboys dipped to 5-3 in the league and 10-12 in all games.
Kainoa Inafuku '14 was 4-of-4 at the plate for Grinnell in the game, while
Adam Renfro '16 and
Matt Blumenreich '13 had three hits each and
Eli Freese '15 came up with two hits. Blumenreich had a double among his totals.
The game was scoreless before Grinnell erupted for seven runs in the third inning on just two hits and a pair of errors.
Matt Schaeffer '14 walked and
Drew Davis '13 reached base during an error on his sacrifice attempt to start the frame.
Anthony Mack '16 followed with a sacrifice fly to left on a play that included an error to score Schaeffer. Inafuku followed with an RBI single to center field and
Walker Bell '15 reached base on a fielder's choice to load the bases.
Freese then hit a sacrifice fly to center. After a double steal,
Phillip Zarcone '15 walked to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed a run to score and Blumenreich plated two more with a single to right. A passed ball resulted in the final run of the inning.
The Blueboys tallied solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings to make it 7-2 before Grinnell got two runs in the eighth. Renfro singled down the left-field line and moved to third on Blumenreich's double to left.
Schaeffer knocked in one run with a single to left and Inafuku later plated another run with a single up the middle.
Illinois College scored two runs in the bottom of the frame to make it 9-4. Grinnell closed out the scoring in the ninth.
Matt Godinsky '16 hit an infield single and
Steven Petritis '15 came in to pinch run. Petritis went to second on Zarcone's sacrifice, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Blumenreich's single to right.
Graham Fisher '16, the second of three Grinnell pitchers, got the win. He scattered two hits over 3-2/3 innings.
In the opener, Nate Jones of Illinois College allowed just two base runners while getting the no-hitter in a 3-0 win. He struck out 10.

The Pioneers travel to Indianola on Wednesday to take on Simpson College in a non-conference affair. Game time is 4 p.m.
