Box Score 2 MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – A day after scoring just five runs in a split with Cornell College, the Grinnell College baseball team's offense went wild.
The Pioneers erupted for 29 runs and 31 hits in a doubleheader sweep of the Rams Sunday at Ash Field. Not only did Grinnell post wins of 15-0 and 14-1, more importantly the Pioneers stayed in contention for the Midwest Conference Tournament by evening their league mark at 6-6 while moving to 11-15 overall. Cornell dropped to 3-5 in the MWC and 8-16 in all games.
In the opener,
Jason Ormond '13 tossed a complete-game three-hitter and struck out eight. Offensively,
Anthony Mack '16 pounded out four of Grinnell's 14 hits, including a pair of doubles.
Walker Bell '15 had three hits, including his second homer of the year and a double.
Drew Davis '13 chipped in with two hits, including a pair of doubles.
Grinnell shot out to an 8-0 lead through two innings, tallying three in the first and five in the second. Mack had an RBI single to right in the first and Bell hit an RBI double down the left-field line. Another run was plated via an error.
In the second, Mack had an RBI single to left,
Kainoa Inafuku '14 hit a sacrifice fly to right and Bell's homer to left scored three runs.
Grinnell put the game away in the sixth with seven runs. Bell had an RBI single to right,
Matt Blumenreich '13 plated a run with a single to left,
Matt Schaeffer '14 knocked in a run with a fielder's choice,
Adam Renfro's 16 single to left pushed a run across and Mack had an RBI double down the right-field line.
In the second game, the Pioneers rapped out 17 hits including three each by Davis, Inafuku,
Phillip Zarcone '15, Bell and Renfro. Bell had two doubles and Renfro one.
Grinnell got two runs in the second and third innings, and three in the fourth and sixth for a 10-0 lead. In the second,
Ryan Penaflor '16 plated a run with a single to right-center and Renfro knocked in another run with a double to left. Bell scored both runs in the third with a double down the left-field line.
In the fourth, Renfro had an RBI double to left, Mack knocked in a run with a single to right and Inafuku came up with a sacrifice fly to center. In the sixth, Inafuku's infield single scored a run, Blumenreich had a bases-loaded walk to force in another run and a wild pitch made it 10-0.
Cornell got its lone run in the bottom of the sixth. The Pioneers finished off the win with four runs in the seventh. Inafuku had an RBI single to center, Zarcone knocked in two runs with a single to left and Penaflor hit into a fielder's choice which plated a runner.
Sam Tinkham '16, who had a perfect game through four innings, got the win as he scattered four hits through six innings and struck out two.
Grinnell entertains Monmouth College in another key MWC twin bill Thursday. The first pitch at Pioneer Park is set for 1 p.m.
