Grinnell takes pair of baseball games from Monmouth

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MONMOUTH, Ill. – After losing a pair of games to Monmouth College Thursday, the Grinnell College baseball team made amends with a pair of victories over the Fighting Scots Saturday.

Grinnell posted victories of 7-2 and 8-5 to improve to 8-8 in the Midwest Conference and 13-17 overall. The Fighting Scots fell to 3-9 in league play and 7-23 overall.

In the opener, Kainoa Inafuku '14 pounded out three hits and Drew Davis '13 and Walker Bell '15 had two apiece. Davis and Phillip Zarcone '15 had homers among their totals, while Davis, Inafuku and Adam Renfro '16 all doubled.

Jason Ormond '13 earned the pitching win, scattering eight hits while tossing 7-2/3 innings. He struck out two.

Grinnell scored a run in the first inning on Zarcone's sacrifice. Monmouth tied the game in the fourth, but the Pioneers took the lead for good with four runs in the fifth. Zarcone's three-run homer to left-center sparked the inning, while Renfro scored on an error.

Grinnell tacked on solo runs in the eighth and ninth innings. In the eighth, Bell's single plated Zarcone and in the ninth Davis sent a shot over the left-field fence.

Monmouth scored one run in the bottom of the ninth.

In the second game, Zarcone had three hits and Matt Blumenreich '13 two. Anthony Mack '16 added a double to the cause.

Andrew Kelley '14 picked up the pitching win, tossing three-hit ball over three innings of relief, and Will Pahos '14 got the save.

Grinnell got out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in the first and third innings. In the first, Bell knocked in a run with a fielder's choice and Inafuku stole home. In the third, Bell had a two-run single to left.

Monmouth tied the game with a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth. The Pioneers took the lead for good with two runs in the seventh as Eli Freese '15 hit a sacrifice fly and Blumenreich singled in a run. Grinnell tacked on another run in the eighth on Mack's double to left field.

Monmouth scored a run in the bottom of the eighth, but the Pioneers got one back in the ninth on Matt Schaeffer's '14 sacrifice fly.

Grinnell plays Coe College Sunday at Cedar Rapids.
