Pioneers just miss against Coe College

Box Score CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Grinnell College baseball team took a big early lead on Coe College, a squad receiving votes for the national rankings, and extended the game to extra innings before falling 8-7 in non-conference action Sunday.

Anthony Mack '16, Kainoa Inafuku '14 and Walker Bell '15 all had two hits for the Pioneers, who are 13-18 overall. Coe improved to 24-10.
 
Grinnell jumped out to a 6-0 lead with a five-run outburst in the first inning and another run in the third. Drew Davis '13 led off the first with a single to left and went to second on Mack's bunt single. Inafuku followed with another bunt single to load the bases. Davis scored when Phillip Zarcone '15 reached base on a fielder's choice and Bell knocked a two-run single to center field to make it 3-0.

Ryan Penaflor '16 reached base on an error to plate another run and Adam Renfro '16 knocked in another run with a groundout.

In the third, Matt Blumenreich '13 reached base on a fielder's choice and advanced to second before scoring on a single to left by Matt Schaeffer '14.

Coe scored four runs in the fourth inning and two in the sixth to tie the game. It remained 6-all through nine innings and then through 10 before the Pioneers put a run on the board in the 11th when Davis walked, advanced to third on a single to left-center by Inafuku and scored when Zarcone reached base on an error.

However, Coe had a two-run single in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory.

Andrew Platt '13 suffered the loss despite tossing one-hit ball over 2-1/3 innings.

Grinnell travels to Rock Island, Ill., on Wednesday to face Augustana College in a non-conference contest. Game time is 7 p.m.
