Box Score 2 GRINNELL, Iowa – Knox College pitchers limited Grinnell College to just four hits as the Prairie Fire earned a baseball sweep Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Park.
The visitors, who improved to 3-1 in the Midwest Conference South Division and 9-5 overall, won the opener 7-3 and then took the second game 3-1. Grinnell is now 1-3 in the league and 6-12 in all games.
In the opener, Knox scored twice in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings and once in the sixth for a 7-0 lead.
Grinnell made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth.
Drew Davis '13 was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch and stole third.
Kainoa Inafuku '14 then walked before another wild pitch sent Davis across the plate.
Walker Bell '15 was then hit by a pitch and
Ryan Penaflor '16 walked to load the bases.
Anthony Mack '16 later had an RBI groundout and
Matt Blumenreich '13 knocked in a run with a fielder's choice before a flyout ended the game.
Grinnell's hits in the game were a double by Mack and single by Davis.
Jason Ormond '13 suffered the pitching loss, scattering eight hits and fanning four batters in seven innings.
In the second game, Grinnell pitchers
Sam Tinkham '16 and
Andrew Kelley '14 teamed up to toss a seven-hitter but the Pioneers managed just two hits themselves.
Knox scored three runs in the second before the Pioneers answered with one in the third as
Jacob Beecher '16 walked, moved to third on a single to right by
Yuki Kawahara '15 and scored on a sacrifice fly by Davis.
Grinnell's other hit was a double by Penaflor.
Tinkham – who suffered the loss - gave up four hits and struck out three in six innings of work, while Kelley didn't surrender a hit in the final three innings and struck out one.
The Pioneers host Illinois College in a pair of doubleheaders next weekend. Saturday's action begins at 1 p.m. and Sunday's games are at 10 a.m.
