Pioneer baseball team falls to nationally-ranked Augustana

Box Score MOLINE, Ill. – A five-run third inning sent the nationally-ranked Augustana College baseball team past Grinnell College 9-2 on Wednesday.

Grinnell managed eight hits in the game, including two apiece by Kainoa Inafuku '14 and Ryan Penaflor '16. Grinnell, 13-19 on the season, left 11 runners on base.

Augustana, ranked 21st by D3baseball.com, scored once in the first inning and five times in the third for a 6-0 edge.

The Pioneers scored both their runs in the fifth inning. Anthony Mack '16 led off with a single to right, Walker Bell '15 was hit by a pitch and both runners then advanced via a double steal.

Penaflor followed with a two-run single to center to make it a 6-2 game.

However, the 27-8 Vikings recorded solo runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings for the 9-2 victory.

Will Pahos '14 was tagged with the pitching loss despite giving up no earned runs and just one hit in two innings.

Grinnell is done with regular-season play and now awaits to find if it will qualify for the Midwest Conference Tournament.
