Grinnell baseball team set for 2013 MWC Championships

RIPON, Wis. – The Grinnell College baseball team will take aim at the 2013 Midwest Conference title when it competes in the league tournament this weekend.

The Pioneers finished second in the South Division with an 8-8 mark while going 13-19 overall. They will meet tourney host Ripon College, the North champion, at 9 a.m. Friday. The Red Hawks went 14-2 in their division and are 21-13 overall.

The other first-round game pits South champion Knox College (13-3 division, 21-11 overall) and North runner-up St. Norbert College (12-4, 24-11).

The first-round winners play at 1 p.m., with the losers facing off at 4 p.m.

The tourney then continues into Saturday.

The Pioneers are in the tourney for the fifth consecutive season. Pitching has been the key to the team's success, as they own the league's top ERA at 3.77. Grinnell also ranks 20th nationally in walks allowed per game (2.52).

Jason Ormond '13 owns the best ERA in the MWC at 1.49, while defending MWC South Pitcher of the Year Andrew Kelley '14 ranks among the top 10 in strikeouts with 35. Ormond has a 4-2 mark with 26 strikeouts, while Andrew Platt '13 is 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA.

Offensively, Kainoa Inafuku '14 is the top Pioneer with a .359 batting average, while Walker Bell '15 is hitting .333 with a team-high 31 RBIs and Anthony Mack '16 is at .316.

Ripon leads the MWC in slugging percentage at .443, and the Red Hawks rank fourth nationally in walks allowed per game (2.13).

Taylor Koth is hitting .394 for the Red Hawks, Adam Grambow is at .359 and Tom Sawyer is hitting .347. On the mound, Tom Fish and Patrick Van Daalw lead the team in ERA at 2.80 and 2.83, respectively. Fish owns a 4-2 mark and Van Daalw is 3-3.
