Patrick Maher '14 became the 22nd player in Grinnell College men's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point career milestone as the Pioneers snapped a two-game losing streak, topping Ripon College 110-102 Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.
The win moved Grinnell into a second-place tie with the Red Hawks in the Midwest Conference standings, as both are 7-4. Grinnell is 12-4 overall and Ripon fell to 10-6.
Maher finished with a team-high 25 points, hitting 9-of-14 field goal tries. Also in double figures were
Jack Taylor '15 with 16,
Kyle Parker '17 with 15,
Tague Zachary '15 with 12 and
Aaron Levin '14 with 11.
Levin also had six rebounds, while Zachary blocked three shots. Taylor and Maher came up with three steals apiece.
Ty Sabin scored a game-high 27 points for Ripon, which had beaten Grinnell by 27 points three weeks ago.
The visitors shot out to a five-point lead early, but Grinnell raced back and it was close the rest of the first half. Maher needed 12 points entering the game to reach 1,000 points, and he reached that mark with a free throw at the 3:47 mark.
A 3-pointer by Zachary with :47 left gave the Pioneers a 57-54 lead heading into the locker room.
It remained close in the second half, with Ripon ahead by three when the Pioneers went on a 17-4 lead to pull away.
Luke Yeager '15 began the run with a basket before Taylor and Zachary drained treys, putting the Pioneers ahead 74-69.
After Ripon scored,
Nick Curta '17 and
Mike Porter '17 each made shots to put Grinnell up 78-71. Ripon scored again when Levin hit a 3-pointer and
Dylan Bartuch '15 scored to give Grinnell an 83-73 lead with 12:25 left.
Ripon did rally again, coming within four with 5:52 left and three at the 1:38 mark. However, Maher and Taylor each made layups to push Grinnell ahead 105-98 as the Pioneers secured the win.
Grinnell takes to the road for its next three games, beginning with a 5 p.m. test Tuesday at Monmouth College.
