Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – One day after struggling against St. Norbert College, the Grinnell College volleyball team caught fire.
The Pioneers collected their first Midwest Conference victory of the season Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium, topping Lawrence University in four thrilling sets.
Set scores, in favor of Grinnell, were 25-22, 20-25, 25-21 and 25-19.
With the win, Grinnell moved to 1-3 in the league and 6-15 overall, while Lawrence fell to 3-2 in the MWC and 7-14 in all matches.
Claire Weidman '15 pounded down 14 kills for the winners and
Natalie Duncombe '15 contributed 11.
Margaret Giles '18 added 35 assists and two aces, while
Sarah Garringer '18 came up with three aces.
Lindsay Fujimoto '15 had a match-high 36 digs and Weidman added 16. Garringer also had three block assists and a solo block.
The first set saw seven ties early on before Lawrence pulled away for a three-point lead at 19-16.
Sydney McClendon '16 put together a key three-point service run that included an ace to help push the Pioneers ahead 20-19.
After the Vikings tied it at 20-all, Grinnell finished off the set by scoring five of the final seven points. Weidman had two kills in that span and Giles one.
Lawrence bounced back to win the second set after Grinnell had led 17-12. The third set was tied again, with Lawrence leading 15-12 and later 19-17 and 21-19.
However, Weidman put together a four-point service run that included two kills by her sister,
Evelyn Weidman '17, to secure the win.
Grinnell fell behind 4-0 in the fourth set, but responded with a big run to go ahead 19-11. Garringer and Giles both had four-point service sprees in that time.
The visitors crept back again and cut it to five at 24-19 before
Claire Weidman finished off the victory with a kill.
The Pioneers play a MWC contest at Lake Forest College this coming Friday. Action begins at 7 p.m.
