Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – Illinois College topped the Grinnell College volleyball team three sets to one in an exciting Midwest Conference battle at Darby Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
Set scores, in favor of the winners, were 27-25, 12-25, 28-26 and 25-17. Illinois College improved to 6-4 in the league and 7-16 overall, while the Pioneers dropped to 2-5 in the MWC and 8-17 overall.
Claire Weidman '15 and
Natalie Duncombe '15 each had nine kills for Grinnell, with Weidman hitting .172.
Margaret Giles '18 added 28 assists, while
Sydney McClendon '16 served up five aces and
Evelyn Weidman '17 three.
Lindsay Fujimoto '15 added 18 digs and
Evelyn Weidman had one solo block and four solos.
After losing the first set, Grinnell roared back in the second. With the score tied 6-all, the Pioneers reeled off 12 of the next 15 points for an 18-9 lead.
Sydney Vrecenar '18 served seven points during that run and
Claire Weidman had two kills as the Pioneers coasted to victory.
In the third set, Grinnell built a 20-16 lead with the aid of a nine-point service run by McClendon that included five aces. The Pioneers later were at set point with a 24-22 edge, but the Lady Blues rallied for the victory.
Illinois College broke out to a 6-0 lead in the fourth set en route to the victory.
Grinnell travels to Mount Vernon Wednesday to take on the MWC regular-season champion Cornell College. Match time is 7 p.m.
