Box Score MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The Grinnell College volleyball team dropped a three-set contest to Midwest Conference regular-season champion Cornell College Wednesday night.
Set scores, in favor of the Rams, were 25-13, 25-10 and 25-16. Cornell moved to 10-0 in the league and 19-6 overall, while Grinnell dipped to 2-6 in the MWC and 8-18 in all matches.
Natalie Duncombe '15 had nine kills for Grinnell,
Margaret Giles '18 added 15 assists and
Lindsay Fujimoto '15 and Giles 14 and 13 digs, respectively.
Cornell grabbed a 10-2 lead in the first set en route to victory. In the second set, Grinnell was within 6-5 after a kill by
Rebecca Rasmussen '16 before Cornell went on a key 11-2 run to pull away.
In the third set, Grinnell rallied from a 7-2 deficit with a four-point service run by
Sydney McClendon '16 that included two kills by
Sydney Vrecenar '18, tying the contest at 7-all.
The Pioneers hung close, making it 14-3 after two kills by Duncombe. However, Cornell answered with a six-point run to pull away.
Grinnell entertains Monmouth College Friday night at Darby Gymnasium. The Senior Night contest is slated for 7:30 p.m.
