Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College volleyball team capped its 2014 campaign with a four-set loss to Knox College Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.
The Prairie Fire, who improved to 3-7 in the Midwest Conference and 5-24 overall, won by scores of 25-23, 26-28, 25-23 and 25-18. Grinnell finished up at 2-8 in the league and 8-20 in all matches.
Natalie Duncombe '15 and
Claire Weidman'15 concluded their Pioneer careers in awesome fashion, as Duncombe had 17 kills and hit .293 and Weidman added 15 kills while hitting .333.
Weidman also had three ace serves.
Margaret Giles '18 tallied 38 assists, while
Lindsay Fujimoto '15 had 18 digs.
Emma Knatterud-Johnson '15 added 16 digs, Giles had 11 and
Sydney McClendon '16 came up with 10.
Evelyn Weidman '17 and
Rebecca Rasmussen '16 each had three blocks.
Grinnell led the first set 21-19, and there were ties at 22-all and 23-all before the Prairie Fire won. It was opposite in the second set, when the Pioneers trailed 24-22 before an attack error by Knox and ace by Giles tied things at 24-all.
After Knox took leads of 25-24 and 26-25, Duncombe pounded down three consecutive kills to give Grinnell the two-point win.
The third set was tight the entire way before Knox pulled out the win. The Prairie Fire shot out to leads of 10-4 and 19-10 in the fourth set to secure the victory.
