Jack Taylor '15 erupted for 52 points, but it wasn't enough as the Grinnell College men's basketball team dropped a 118-109 decision to Beloit College in the Midwest Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.
Taylor drained 11-of-24 shots from 3-point land and was 11-of-12 from the free throw line for the Pioneers, who fell to 1-2 overall. It was the third time Taylor has gone over the 50-point mark in his Pioneer career.
Tague Zachary '15 added 16 points for the Pioneers and
Luke Yeager '15 chipped in 11. Zachary also had two blocked shots, and Yeager a pair of steals as well as four assists.
Steve McAfee scored 43 points for the Buccaneers, who improved to 2-0.
The first half was tight most of the way, with Grinnell taking a three-point lead at 27-24 on Taylor's trey at the 13:02 mark. But Beloit stayed close and led 69-64 at intermission.
Grinnell hung close in the second half, tying it at 94-all when Taylor sank a pair of free throws at the 7:54 mark. But Beloit went back in front again and never relinquished the lead.
The Pioneers entertain Monmouth College Tuesday night at Darby Gymnasium. Game time is 7 p.m.
