Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – In a game that saw 67 fouls and 97 free throw attempts, the Monmouth College men's basketball team used a second-half rally to defeat Grinnell College 119-114 Tuesday night at Darby Gymnasium.
Jack Taylor '15 scored a game-high 35 points for the Pioneers, who fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the Midwest Conference. He was 6-of-13 from 3-point land.
Luke Yeager '15 added 29 points,
Tague Zachary '15 grabbed six rebounds and
Braedon Bayer '18 dished out four assists.
Nick Curta '17 and
Jacob Ekstrand '18 had two blocks each.
Monmouth, 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the league, got 35 points from Andrew Mathison.
The game was tight early before Grinnell pulled away with a 14-2 run. Taylor and
Mike Porter '17 hit consecutive 3-pointers to push Grinnell ahead 22-13.
After a bucket by Monmouth, Porter hit another trey, Taylor made a jumper and
Anthony LaMacchia sank a 3-pointer to make it 30-15 with 10:23 left in the first half.
However, the Fighting Scots chipped away and were within 51-45 at intermission.
Grinnell held off the visitors, though, and built a 10-point cushion at 67-57 on Curta's three free throws at the 15:19 mark.
But Monmouth responded and took the lead for good with a basket at the 13:02 mark. The Fighting Scots pushed their lead as big as seven on a handful of occasions.
Grinnell got as close as three late in the game when Taylor's 3-pointer made it 117-114 with :15 left. However, Monmouth made a pair of free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
The Pioneers return to Darby Gymnasium Saturday when Lake Forest College visits for a MWC contest. Game time is 3 p.m.
