Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College men's basketball team won its first Midwest Conference game of the season in resounding fashion Saturday afternoon, rolling past Lake Forest College 130-116 at Darby Gymnasium.
Jack Taylor '15 led the Pioneers' balanced scoring attack with 33 points, including a 13-of-14 performance from the free throw line.
Luke Yeager '15 added 26 points,
Julian Marx '17 drained 6-of-10 3-pointers to finish with 18 points,
Nick Curta '17 tallied 11 points and
Braedon Bayer '18 scored 10.
Bayer nearly had a double-double as he also dished out nine assists and had three steals. Curta grabbed five rebounds.
Grinnell is now 1-2 in the league and 2-3 overall, while Lake Forest fell to 1-2 in the MWC and 1-3 in all games.
Grinnell trailed by a point at 23-22 before going on a 15-4 run to pull away. Bayer had a 3-pointer and basket in that span,
Ikaika Phillip '18 and Yeager added treys and Taylor had a basket and two free throws as the Pioneers took a 37-27 lead with 9:03 left in the first half.
Lake Forest closed within seven before the Pioneers gradually pulled away for a 78-50 halftime lead.
Grinnell continued to sail in the second half en route to victory.
The Pioneers step out of league play Sunday when Presentation College visits Darby Gymnasium. Game time is 3 p.m.
