Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College men's basketball team geared up for next weekend's Midwest Conference Tournament in impressive fashion Saturday afternoon, topping Lawrence University 122-111 at Darby Gymnasium.
The Pioneers'
Patrick Maher '14 celebrated Senior Day with a double-double, scoring a game-high 26 points to go along with 10 assists and eight rebounds. He was 5-of-10 from 3-point land.
Jack Taylor '15 added 24 points,
Luke Yeager '15 scored 22 with the aid of 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc and
Julian Marx '17 drained 6-of-8 treys while scoring 20 points.
Kyle Parker '17 added eight rebounds and three steals and
Tague Zachary '16 a pair of blocks for the Pioneers, who are 13-5 in the MWC and 18-5 overall. The overall win total is tied for second-most in school history.
Ryan DePouw had 26 points for the Vikings, who are 10-8 in the league and 12-11 in all games.
Grinnell built a nine-point lead in the first half before Lawrence sawed the gap to three. The Pioneers responded with a key 9-1 run to grab a 49-38 lead. Marx, Maher and Yeager all had 3-pointers during that span.
Grinnell got the lead as big as 11 before going into the locker room with a 66-62 edge.
Lawrence scored to open the second half, but the Pioneers came back with a 9-3 run to push the four-point lead to 77-67. Marx had a 3-pointer during the run, Parker added a layup, Maher two free throws and
Ryan Davis '16 a basket.
The Vikings only came within single digits once after that, at nine points with just over five minutes to play.
The Pioneers earned the second seed in the league tourney and will face third-seeded Ripon College at 1:30 p.m. Friday in De Pere, Wis. Top-seeded St. Norbert College and fourth-seeded Carroll University square off in the other semifinal.
