Grinnell uses sizzling-hot shooting performance to advance to title game

Box Score DE PERE, Wis. – The Grinnell College men's basketball team parlayed a sizzling hot shooting performance Friday afternoon into a trip to the Midwest Conference Tournament championship game.

The Pioneers set a school record for 3-point percentage in a game, hitting 61.4 percent of their shots from beyond the arc, to earn a 122-115 victory over Ripon College in semifinal action at Schuldes Sports Center.

Grinnell was equally hot from the free throw line, sinking 23-of-27 foul shots for 85.2 percent.

The Pioneers, who tied a school record for wins in a season while improving to 19-5, will play in the league title game for the first time in three years. They will face either fifth-ranked St. Norbert College for the crown at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Luke Yeager '15 had a hot hand for Grinnell, scoring a game-high 29 points with the help of 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point land and a perfect 12-of-12 performance from the free throw line.

Julian Marx '17 drained 7-of-9 treys while scoring 25 points, and Kyle Parker '17 was 4-of-5 from beyond the arc to score 20.

Jack Taylor '15 scored 11 points and Patrick Maher '14 had a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists to go along with five rebounds. Yeager also had two steals.

After falling behind by two points, Grinnell took control of the game with a 15-2 run. Mike Porter '17 began things with a 3-pointer, followed by consecutive treys by Yeager to make it 17-10.

After a basket by Ripon, Anthony LaMacchia '16 and Taylor each hit 3-pointers to put Grinnell on top 23-12 with 14:28 left.

Ripon got within nine points before the Pioneers took off again, holding a 61-40 lead at halftime.

The Red Hawks gradually came back in the second half and made it a seven-point game with :34 left. However, Maher made two free throws with :16 left to put the Pioneers up 120-111.

After Ripon got a basket, Yeager drained two free throws to secure the win.

With the loss, Ripon finishes its season at 15-9.

On Saturday, the Pioneers will be playing for their first MWC title and trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2001.
