Hot 3-point shooting in 2nd half sends Grinnell men past Beloit

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – With the help of a super-hot 3-point shooting streak in the second half, the Grinnell College men's basketball team stretched its winning streak to five games Saturday afternoon with a 111-98 decision over Beloit College at Darby Gymnasium.

During a stretch in the second half, Grinnell hit 6-of-7 shots from 3-point land, 11-of-13 and 13-of-16 as the Pioneers moved to 11-4 in the Midwest Conference and 16-4 overall.

Jack Taylor '15 had a game-high 29 points for Grinnell, hitting 8-of-15 shots from beyond the arc. Also in double figures were Luke Yeager '15 with 21, Patrick Maher '14 with 19 and Julian Marx '17 with 17.

Maher also had game-highs of six assists and five steals to go along with four rebounds. Tague Zachary '15 blocked two shots and Kyle Parker '17 tied Maher for the team lead in boards with four.

James Lazarcik had 29 points to lead the Buccaneers, who fell to 6-8 in the league and 8-11 overall.

The first half went back and forth, with Grinnell leading 45-41 at its conclusion. Beloit gradually pulled away in the second stanza, going up by 10 points with 11:11 left before the Pioneers began their 3-point spree.

Taylor had a trio of treys, Marx two and Parker one as Grinnell turned the deficit into an 85-83 lead. The Pioneers then made five of their next six 3-pointers, with swishes coming from Anthony LaMacchia '17, Marx, Maher, Taylor and Yeager as they stretched their lead to 11 at 97-86 with 5:45 remaining.

Yeager and Maher had makes in another 2-for-3 stretch as Grinnell led 106-92 at that point and never looked back.

The Pioneers play at nationally-ranked St. Norbert College next Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
