Grinnell netters fall to St. Olaf, Wisconsin-Stout at St. Catherine Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Grinnell College volleyball team finished the St. Catherine Tournament with a four-set loss to St. Olaf College on Saturday.
 
Grinnell won the opening set 25-10, but St. Olaf came back with wins of 25-21, 25-13 and 25-10.
 
Earlier in the day, Grinnell lost 25-19, 25-19 and 25-14 to the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
 
Grinnell's Claire Weidman '15 had 10 kills, 13 digs and served up three aces against UW-Stout. Margaret Giles '18 added 23 assists, while Lindsay Fujimoto '15 tallied 17 digs. Evelyn Weidman '17 added three blocks.
 
The opening set was tight early, with Natalie Duncombe's '15 kill making it 11-all. UW-Stout followed with a key four-point run to take the lead.
 
Grinnell got as close as 16-14 on a kill by Giles before UW-Stout countered with a 6-1 run to pull away.
 
The Pioneers also played a strong second set, grabbing a 15-14 lead on Dumcombe's kill before UW-Stout answered with a 6-2 run. Grinnell got within 20-18 on Claire Weidman's kill, but UW-Stout scored five of the final six points.
 
The winners opened the third set by scoring 10 of the first 13 points en route to victory.
 
In the St. Olaf match, Claire Weidman pounded down 15 kills and Giles had 32 assists. Sydney McClendon '16 and Evelyn Weidman served two aces each, Fujimoto had 31 digs and Giles 10 digs. Evelyn Weidman added three blocks.
 
In the opening set, a four-point service run by Fujimoto got Grinnell out to a 9-3 lead. The Pioneers still led 17-11 a while later before closing things out with the final eight points of the set. Giles served six of those, and Claire Weidman and Evelyn Weidman each had two kills in that span.
 
Grinnell had a big start in the second set, as well, using a four-point run to go up 12-9. Giles served two of those points. It was still tight later and tied at 18-all before St. Olaf used a four-point run to pull away and eventually go on to the win.
 
St. Olaf got out to a 13-5 run in the third set en route to victory, and 12-3 edge in the fourth to also win that set and the match.

Grinnell, 5-12 on the season, opens Midwest Conference play this coming Friday at Ripon College. Match time is 7 p.m.
