GRINNELL, Iowa – With the aid of 30 forced turnovers, the Grinnell College men's basketball team rallied from a 16-point deficit to topple Ripon College 112-96 in a key Midwest Conference contest Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.
Jack Taylor '15 scored 18 points and came up with four steals for the Pioneers, who improved to 4-3 in the league and 6-6 overall.
Tague Zachary '15 added 16 points and five rebounds, while
Kyle Parker '17 and
Matt Jasaitis '18 had 15 points each. Parker also had five rebounds.
Braedon Bayer '18 added 13 points and five steals, while
Mike Porter '17 dished out five assists.
Ty Sabin scored 25 points for the Red Hawks, who are 6-2 in the MWC and 9-4 overall.
The Pioneers twice trailed by 16 in the first half, the final time at 32-16 at the 8:16 mark.
But Grinnell answered with a nine-point run as Jasaitis hit one trey and Zachary two to make it 32-25 with 7:11 left. The Pioneers got as close as five before settling for a 52-43 halftime deficit.
Parker began the second half with two free throws,
Nick Curta '17 added a layup and
Luke Yeager '15 a 3-pointer to bring the hosts within 52-50 with 18:49 left.
After Ripon went up by five, Grinnell went on a pivotal 15-2 run to take control. Parker started with consecutive 3-pointers to push Grinnell ahead 56-55. After Ripon scored,
Julian Marx '17, Bayer and Parker all had 3-pointers to make it a 65-57 lead with 15:49 remaining.
Ripon rallied and forced two ties, the last at 81-all with 6:29 left. But Marx, Taylor and Bayer all had 3-pointers in a 9-1 run to put the Pioneers up 90-82 at the 5:09 mark.
Ripon never got closer than six after that as Grinnell sailed to the victory.
Grinnell travels to Galesburg, Ill., on Tuesday to take on Knox College. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
