GALESBURG, Ill. –
Kayla Morrissey '18 had a monstrous game for the Grinnell College women's basketball team Tuesday, but the Pioneers fell short in a 97-91 setback to Knox College in Midwest Conference action.
Morrissey scored a career-high 30 points with the aid of 13-of-22 field goal shooting, and added 20 rebounds, the fourth-highest total in school history.
Alissa Hirsh '16 added 26 points and
Sophia Gatton '17 had 15 for the Pioneers, who are 4-4 in the MWC and 6-7 in all games.
Gatton also had three steals,
Alex Neckopulos '17 grabbed 10 rebounds and Hirsh dished out six assists.
With the win, Knox moved to 4-4 in the league and 6-7 overall.
The 91 points for Grinnell were the sixth-most in a game in school history. Knox entered the game ranked second nationally in scoring.
The Pioneers got out to a quick lead and were up by 16 at 50-34 on Gatton's jumper with 4:07 left in the first half. But the hosts rallied and were within 58-52 at intermission.
The Prairie Fire opened the second half with eight consecutive points to go ahead. However, Grinnell rallied and built an 11-point cushion at 81-70 on
Ariel Keller's '17 jumper with 8:55 left.
But again Knox came back, taking the lead for good with 3:06 left.
Grinnell plays a MWC contest against Carroll University Saturday in Waukesha, Wis. Game time is 1 p.m.
