GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College broke out to the halftime lead, but Carroll University rallied in the second half to stay unbeaten with a 109-103 men's basketball win Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.
The Pioneers, who led by as many as 11 in the first half, got 20 points from
Julian Marx '17 and 18 from
Ikaika Phillip '18.
Vinny Curta '19 poured in 14 points,
Danny Thomas '18 had 11 and
Jacob Ekstrand '18 scored 10.
Thomas dished out four assists and
Nick Curta '17,
Sean Cullinane '18 and
Gus King '18 had two steals each.
Jake Van Oort '18 added six rebounds.
Grinnell is now 1-4 in the Midwest Conference and 4-6 overall, while Carroll moved to 4-0 in league play and 6-0 in all games.
The Pioneers' biggest lead came at the 3:09 mark of the first half when Phillip's 3-pointer made it 46-35. However, Carroll rallied to within 49-46 by halftime.
Grinnell pushed the lead as big as eight in the second half when Marx's free throws made it 72-64 with 12:18 left. However, the visitors rallied and took the lead for good at 79-77 with 8:30 remaining in the game.
