LAKE FOREST, Ill. –
Alissa Hirsh '16 broke onto the Grinnell College women's basketball all-time top 10 scoring list in the Pioneers' narrow 60-59 loss at Lake Forest College Saturday afternoon.
Grinnell led most of the second half before giving up the lead with 3:17 left. After closing within one, the Pioneers had the ball and an attempt at a final shot but couldn't convert.
Hirsh led all scorers with 22 points to put her at 921 for her career and 10th place on Grinnell's all-time list, passing Jessica Shotts. Hirsh also had six assists and a pair of steals.
Leah Greenberg '17 was hot from 3-point land, connecting on 5-of-8 long-range shots to finish with 15 points.
Kayla Morrissey '18 was also in double digits with 13.
Alex Neckopulos '17 grabbed seven rebounds and
Sophia Gatton '17 added two steals.
The Pioneers, who limited Lake Forest to 28.6 percent shooting from the field. fell behind by seven in the first half before roaring back with an 11-point run with eight of those points coming from Hirsh on a 3-pointer, two baskets and a free throw.
A Greenberg 3-pointer with 5:46 left in the first half made it a 21-17 Grinnell lead.
The Pioneers led 30-27 at the break and stretched their lead to seven in the second half when Morrissey's trey made it 49-42 with 8:31 left.
However, the hosts came back to take the lead and were up by four with 2:03 left. Neither team scored until Greenberg drained a 3-pointer with :36 left to make it 60-59.
Lake Forest then missed two free throws to set up a potential game-winner for the Pioneers. After a missed shot, Grinnell had one more chance to score on an inbound play with three-tenths of a second left but couldn't get it off before the buzzer.
The Pioneers are now 7-9 in the Midwest Conference and 9-12 in all games heading into their home finale Wednesday against Knox College. Action at Darby Gymnasium begins at 5:30 p.m.
Lake Forest improved to 11-6 in the league and 12-10 in all games.
