Grinnell 8, Central 1GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College men's tennis team enjoyed a successful Saturday, winning three of four matches as a split-squad unit.

At the Charles Benson Bear '39 Recreation and Athletic Center Field House, the Pioneers defeated NCAA Division II Augustana College of South Dakota by a 5-4 score and then topped Central College 8-1.

At the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational, the Pioneers defeated Wheaton College 5-4 in a battle of regionally-ranked teams. Grinnell entered the contest ranked 12th in the Central Region, while Wheaton is 14th.

After that, the Pioneers lost 9-0 to the host school, which is ranked seventh regionally and 25th in the nation.

In the win over Wheaton, the Pioneers broke out to a 2-1 lead through doubles with victories by
Elliott Czarnecki '15 and
Tommy Pitcher '17 at No. 1 (8-6) and
Aaron Lapkin '15 and
Cole Miller '17 at No. 3 (8-5).

Miller won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles,
Tracy Johnson '16 posted a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 and Pitcher won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6.

The Pioneers also broke out to a 2-1 lead in doubles against Augustana with the second and third teams of
C.J. Ray '16 and
Will Hamilton '17 (8-5) and
Charlie Wilhelm '15 and
Sam Catanzaro '16 (8-1).

The Pioneers won at Nos. 2, 5 and 6 singles with Ray (6-3, 6-1), Catanzaro (6-4, 6-1) and
Caleb Kumar '16 (6-4, 4-6, 10-4).

Ray and Hamilton won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles against Central, while Wilhelm and Catanzaro posted an 8-5 victory at No. 3.

Grinnell swept singles with Wilhelm (6-0, 6-1), Ray (6-0, 6-0),
Rob Storrick '15 (6-1, 6-2),
Bryson Cale '16 (6-0, 6-2), Kumar (6-0, 6-2) and Hamilton (6-2, 6-1).

Grinnell is now 6-4 on the season.
