UW-Eau Claire 5, Grinnell 4GRINNELL, Iowa – Playing its first split-squad matches of the season Sunday, one Grinnell College men's tennis squad rolled to a victory while the other lost a hard-fought nail-biter in a battle of regionally-ranked teams.

The former squad rolled to a 6-3 victory over NCAA Division II Truman State University at the Charles Benson Bear '39 Recreation and Athletic Center. The latter built a 2-1 lead after doubles before falling 5-4 to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

In the win over Truman State, the Pioneers trailed 2-1 after doubles before coming back with a huge performance in singles.

Charlie Wilhelm '15 was a double winner for Grinnell. He blanked his foe at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-0 and teamed with
Beau Bressler '16 to win 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.

Other singles winners were
Bryson Cale '16 at No. 3 (6-3, 6-3),
Sam Catanzaro '16 at No. 4 (7-5, 2-6, 7-5),
Caleb Kumar '16 at No. 5 (6-2, 6-2) and
Will Hamilton '17 at No. 6 (6-0, 6-0).

Elliott Czarnecki '15 and
Tracy Johnson '16 were double winners in the match with UW-Eau Clare. Czarnecki won 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 at the top singles spot and teamed with
Tommy Pitcher '17 to earn an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles.

Johnson won 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 at No. 4 singles and teamed with
Emilio Gomez '15 to earn an 8-4 victory at the second doubles level.

Grinnell, 2-2 on the season, meets Carleton College next Saturday at Urbandale. Match time is slated for 5 p.m.
