PELLA, Iowa – Grinnell College's baseball team pounded out three home runs as it worked past Central College 9-8 in non-conference action Wednesday.
Graham Fisher '16 and
Walker Bell '15 each had two hits for the Pioneers, who improved to 3-8.
John Essig '16 worked the final three innings to earn the win, striking out five in the process. Starter
Sam Tinkham '16 also fanned five.
Central scored twice in the second before the Pioneers responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning on
Matt Godinsky's '16 two-run homer to left.
Central tallied two runs in the fifth inning to go up 4-2, but the Pioneers came back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth with the aid of Fisher's two-run double to center and a sacrifice fly by Bell.
Central scored a run in the sixth and two in the seventh to make it 7-6. However, the Pioneers answered with three runs in the bottom of the seventh on Mack's two-run homer and Fisher's solo shot.
Central scored one run in the eighth to conclude the scoring.
The Pioneers entertain Simpson College at 2 p.m. Thursday.
