Grinnell baseball team bounces back to earn split

ST. LOUIS – Grinnell College's baseball team bounced back from a 7-5 loss to Washington University to split Sunday's twin bill with a 4-0 victory.

Ian Sales '15 tossed a complete-game five-hitter for Grinnell in the nightcap and struck out two to collect the win.

Graham Fisher '16 and Matt Godinsky '16 each homered for the Pioneers, who improved to 9-12.

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Grinnell tallied a run on Godinsky's solo homer to left. In the sixth, Fisher belted a three-run blast to left field to account for the final score.

In the opener, Fisher had a pair of doubles and Godinsky another.

The hosts scored three runs in the third inning to grab a 3-0 lead, but the Pioneers answered with solo runs in the fourth through sixth innings to tie it. A wild pitch allowed the run in the fourth to score, Steven Petritis '15 had an RBI single to left in the fifth and Matt Hammond '17 had an RBI single to center in the sixth.

Grinnell took a 5-3 lead in the top of the eighth with the aid of an error and Godsinsky's RBI double down the left-field line.

However, the hosts scored twice in the bottom of the inning and had a game-winning homer in the ninth.

Grinnell travels to Augustana College for a contest Wednesday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
