MOLINE, Ill. – Grinnell College's baseball team took the early lead before falling to Augustana College, which was ranked nationally last week, by a 15-5 score Wednesday night.
The Pioneers scored in the top of the first inning when
Graham Fisher's '16 single to left scored
Niko Takayesu '18.
However, the hosts scored three runs in the bottom of the first and second innings, and four more in the sixth, for a 10-1 lead.
The Pioneers cut into the lead with a four-run outburst in the seventh inning.
Michael Slattery's '18 fielder's choice plated
Sam Galanek '18, and
Teague Towner '17 knocked in
Matt Godinsky '16 on a fielder's choice.
Matt Hammond '17 followed with a two-run single down the right-field line to score Towner and Slattery.
But Augustana scored five times in the bottom of the seventh to go ahead by 10 runs.
Grinnell, 9-13, entertains Cornell College in a twin bill Saturday. The first pitch is at noon. Augustana improved to 20-9.
