MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Cornell College worked past the Grinnell College baseball team 4-3 and 5-1 in a Midwest Conference South Division twin bill Friday night.
In the opener, Cornell bolted out to a 4-0 lead with three runs in the first inning and another in the second. Grinnell got a run in the fourth on
Ryan Penaflor's '15 RBI groundout.
The Pioneers made things interesting with two runs in the top of the ninth with the aid of
Sam Galanek's '18 RBI single to left as well as an error. But Cornell managed to finish off the win.
Graham Fisher '16 worked the entire game on the mound for the Pioneers, striking out eight.
Grinnell got out to a 1-0 lead in the second game on Fisher's RBI double down the right-field line in the third inning. However, Cornell scored three runs in the fifth, another in the sixth and one more in the eight.
Fisher finished with three hits, including a double, while
Walker Bell '15 had two hits.
Sam Tinkham '16 fanned six batters in six innings and was the pitcher of record.
Grinnell is now 9-15 overall and 2-4 in the MWC, while Cornell moved to 13-12 overall and 7-3 in the league.
The teams meet for a twin bill today in Grinnell, beginning at noon.
