Box Score 2 GRINNELL, Iowa – Thanks in part to a record-setting performance, the Grinnell College baseball team avenged Friday's losses to Cornell College with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers won the opener 11-1 with the aid of
Teague Towner's '17 three sacrifice hits, which ties an NCAA Division III record. He joined two other people in that category, including teammate
Ryan Penaflor '15, who accomplished that feat against Coe College in 2013.
Graham Fisher '16 had three hits for the Pioneers, while
Anthony Mack '16 and
Matt Hammond '17 added two apiece. Hammond had a homer among his totals and Mack a double.
Cornell opened the scoring with a run in the third inning before the Pioneers countered with four in the bottom of the frame with Hammond's two-run homer to left-center, Fisher's RBI single to left and an error.
The Pioneers got another run in the fourth on an error and scored in the seventh on Fisher's RBI single through the left side.
Grinnell finished the game with five runs in the eighth. Mack had a two-run double to right-center, another run came across via an error and Hammond finished the contest with a two-run single to left.
Andrew Mack '18 got the pitching win, scattering nine hits and striking out four.
Grinnell then posted a 3-2 victory in a game that was stopped due to rain in the sixth inning and unable to resume.
Fisher had two hits for the Pioneers and
Ian Sales '15 tossed a six-hitter while striking out two.
Grinnell got two runs in the first on Hammond's sacrifice and an error, and scored again in the second when
Niko Takayesu '17 knocked in a run on a fielder's choice.
Cornell scored twice in the top of the sixth inning when the game was halted.
The Pioneers improved to 4-4 in the Midwest Conference South Division and 11-15 overall, while Cornell fell to 7-5 in the league and 13-14 in all games.
Grinnell plays a twin bill at Knox College next Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
