APPLETON, Wis. – The Grinnell College women's basketball team got "defensive" as it began the new calendar year on a solid note Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers stymied Lawrence University 50-37, which is the lowest point total allowed by Grinnell since beating the Vikings in the 2011-12 season when it gave up 35.
Grinnell, 3-3 in the Midwest Conference and 6-5 overall, limited the hosts to just 30 percent shooting from the field and 17.6 from 3-point land.
Sophia Gatton '17 led Grinnell with 14 points, while
Kayla Morrissey '18 had 13 and
Anne Boldt '16 tallied 11.
Alissa Hirsh '16 and
Alex Neckopulos '17 each had six rebounds, while Hirsh also dished out five assists.
Neckopulos and Morrissey had two steals each.
Grinnell shot out to a 14-8 lead by the end of the first period with the aid of a seven-point run to open the game. Boldt made a 3-pointer, and Morrissey and Hirsh followed with baskets for a 7-0 edge.
The Pioneers were up 29-18 at halftime and kept rolling in the third period, leading 41-28 at its end.
Lawrence fell to 0-5 in the MWC and 0-10 in all games.
