Grinnell football team hangs strong early before falling to Vikings

APPLETON, Wis. – Grinnell College's football team hung with Lawrence University for most of the first half before the Vikings pulled away for a 53-7 win Saturday afternoon.
 
The hosts, who are 2-4 in the Midwest Conference and 3-5 overall, led 13-0 after one period and were up 25-0 when Carson Dunn '18 got Grinnell on the board with a 1-yard TD run to make it 25-7 at the half.
 
However, the Vikings continued on from there for the win.
 
Grinnell managed 291 yards of offense and owned time of possession 37:00 to 23:00. Jacob Bernholtz '17 and Dunn rushed for 96 and 90 yards, respectively, while Tony Bergida '18 completed nine passes for 73 yards. Dunn had four catches and David Taylor '20 had three receptions for 46 yards.
 
Defensively, Ryan Slager '19 had 12 tackles and Vinny Pavoni '19 had six.
 
Joe Galaske '17 ended Lawrence's first drive with an interception, and the Pioneers drove into field goal range but the kick was missed.
 
The Vikings scored on their next four drives before Grinnell dented the scoreboard with Dunn's TD run, which capped an 11-play, 57-yard drive. Dunn rushed for 12 and 10 yards on the series, and his touchdown run was followed by an extra point kick by Ibuki Ogasawara '17 with 1:04 left in the half.
 
Grinnell, 0-6 in the MWC and 0-8 overall, hosts Lake Forest College next Saturday. Kickoff at Rosenbloom Field is set for 1 p.m.
