GRINNELL, Iowa – Though Saturday won't be the 4th of July, there could still be plenty of fireworks at Grinnell College's Darby Gymnasium as the nation's top two scoring teams in men's college basketball meet.
The host Pioneers, who are ranked second nationally with a 131.7 per game average, entertain Greenville College in non-conference action at 3 p.m. Greenville is the nation's top-scoring team, averaging 140.8 points an outing.
Both squads run "The System," the high-octane offense devised by Grinnell coach
David Arseneault in the 1990s. From 1994 through 2015, Grinnell won 20 of 22 national scoring titles. However, Greenville took that crown in 2016 with a scoring average of 112.8 per game.
Grinnell is 1-2 this season, with both losses coming to teams picked to finish atop the Iowa Conference. The Pioneers also own a 167-115 victory over Silver Lake College last Saturday.
Greenville is off to a perfect 4-0 start, with wins over Knox (130-106), Elmhurst (110-98), Millikan (145-128) and Lincoln Christian (178-125). In the Lincoln Christian win, the Panthers scored 103 points in the second half.
