GRINNELL, Iowa – A tough night of shooting hurt the Grinnell College women's basketball team in a 56-39 setback to Cornell College in a battle of Midwest Conference unbeatens Wednesday at Darby Gymnasium.
The Pioneers, who are now 2-1 in the league and 4-3 overall, shot just 23.7 percent from the field on 14-of-59 shooting including a 17.4 percent success rate from 3-point land. Cornell, 3-0 in the MWC and 5-2 in all games, countered with a 45.8 percent shooting clip.
Sophia Gatton '17 and
Kayla Morrissey '18 led Grinnell with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Morrissey also had six rebounds, as did
Alex Neckopulos '17, while
Lydia Stariha '17 dished out three assists.
The first period was tight, with Grinnell building a 12-8 lead with the aid of two 3-pointers by Gatton. However, Cornell finished the period with a 7-0 run for a 15-12 edge.
It was still a three-point game early in the second frame when
Leah Greenberg '17 scored to make it 17-14, but Cornell followed with a six-point run on its way to a 30-18 halftime lead.
The Rams led 42-30 after three periods and continued to pull away for the win.
Grinnell closes out its pre-winter break slate Saturday with a contest at Lawrence University, beginning at 1 p.m.
